The strange name means Red of Winter in French and this French heirloom lettuce does indeed thrive in cool conditions. The leaves are dark red to bronze on the tips with a dark green base. Commonly used as a baby leaf variety but also forms a fantastic full-sized head. It has a sweet buttery texture and it grows quickly. The baby leaves are ready in 28 days and takes about 60 days to produce mature leaves. Rouge de Hiver heirloom lettuce with a French name that means red of winter was first listed in Vilmorin s Vegetable Garden Book from 1885. Wild lettuce however from which modern lettuce is derived originated in Asia Minor. The ancient historian Herodotus records its presence on the tables of 6th century Persian kings and throughout the following centuries it became a popular crop all over Europe. Columbus brought it with him to the New World starting its spread over the North American continent. Without a doubt lettuce now holds a place in nearly every garden on the globe.
